In the last two years we have all spent a lot of time at home. Even as we start to venture out into the new normal, the living room continues to be the epicentre of our home. Our living room and dining area look out onto the terrace and garden beyond, and with the doors open it feels like you are right in the garden. Monique and I chose a fantastic Skantherm wood-burning fireplace – it’s both an architectural focal point as well as a great heat source during the winter. Colourful artworks by Mark Francis for Edition Copenhagen create another landscape on one white wall. Comfort comes in the form of our Living Divani sofa, entertainment as Monique plays the guitar with our youngest son around the fire … and chaos as the kids run shrieking round the island trying to kill each other. It’s a real family living space. We drew on the red thread of the client’s collection of art and artefacts: pieces that reflect their international heritage and passion for contemporary and traditional Ethiopian art. The study can often feel a little staid. A little formal – perhaps, dare we say it – a little dull. The study in Amman Villa is anything but. Located near the entrance to this statuesque home, the study is the perfect mix of work, warmth and welcome. Taking inspiration from the client’s sophisticated and vibrant artwork and keepsakes we chose the Giorgetti Urban sofa and armchair to offer comfort and softness with a contemporary yet timeless feel. An elegant Ceccotti coffee table helps to centre the space and doesn’t detract from the beauty of the Luke Irwin rug. Material elements like the bespoke oak joinery, accents of walnut and supple leather complete this space’s soft, sophisticated appeal. A place to work, welcome and kick back – in equal measure. The red thread for this wonderful apartment was the client’s collection of Nigerian artworks and her rich cultural background. We drew inspiration through colour and texture to create a reception room that feels warm, cultured and inviting. Antiques and newly commissioned pieces worked within timeless traditions of craftsmanship and decorative detail. As light floods into our homes this summer, I am reminded of this scene from our Amman Villa project. The iconic Chieftain chair sits perfectly framed by the greenery of the outdoors courtyard. Our hope is that every design decision feels like a natural addition to the room; each piece something that has always been there. The choice of the Chieftain, with its mix of organic lines and natural materials, prompts a connection with nature and enables that perfect mix of prospect and refuge the moment you sit down. Technicolour Kensington was an appropriate name for this project. With a vibrant family life at the heart of the brief, the client wanted a functional home that sparkled with joy. Their collection of artworks served as the perfect red thread so we opted for furniture that served as a foundation for these pieces to sing.
