The Dalilips was created by Salvador Dalí and Oscar Tusquets in 1972. And its sensual presence is constantly striking. Based on Dalí’s painting, The Mae West Room (1936) and the Mae West Lips sofa (1937), the 300 editions of the Dalilips (initially named the ‘Salivasofá’) were made for the Mae West Hall at the Theatre Museum in Figueres.
Due to a lack of technology, the sofa was not commercially viable, but on the centenary of Dalí’s birth in 2004, the Dalilips was released in polyethylene, a high-quality material fit for indoor and outdoor settings. It has been industrially produced ever since. The Dalilips is real and surreal. Its shape, colour and lip lines emulate a giant mouth, and the moulded form is plush, comfortable and visually exciting.

DESIGNED BY
Salvador Dali & Oscar Tusquets
Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres, Catalonia, in 1904. He began drawing when he was 12 and was formally educated in fine arts at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid. He experimented with Cubism, was attracted to Dada and Futurism, and was influenced by the great masters of the Renaissance. In 1929, he joined the Surrealist movement and became its most successful proponent. His work shocked and excited society. Diverse things were merged into an explicit rawness, one with unusual meanings that, when combined, made irreality concrete. Oscar Tusquets describes himself as an architect by training, a designer by adaptation, a painter by vocation, and a writer through the desire to make friends. Born in Barcelona in 1941, Oscar Tusquets graduated as an architect in 1965 from Barcelona’s Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura and was a member of Studi Per, together with Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici, Lluís Clotet, and Mireia Riera. In 1972, they founded BD together, and Tusquets set about designing furniture and other objects, which would be recognised by the Spanish National Design Award.
