The classic English Windsor Chair dates back to the 18th century but has become a touchstone of Modernist design. The starting point for our Spindle Chair and accompanying bar and counter designs was a visit to Louis Kahn’s Exeter Library, where we were inspired by the juxtaposition of a traditional Windsor Chair and the Brutalist geometry of the architecture.
We wanted to create that same frisson between old and new by stripping the distinctive silhouette to its essence, making the legs and spindles as slender as possible, and crafting them from metal rather than wood. In each design, the ergonomic carved wooden elements appear weightless, with minimal supports. The result is an updated classic that draws an elegant, refined line across three centuries. Each chair and stool is engineered with a commercial grade return swivel for ease of use and a neat appearance, also making them a highly practical solution for hospitality environments.
BRAND HIGHLIGHT
The duo’s work spans architectural projects and interiors, but it is their furniture that caught the eye of Staffan Tollgård and which is available through Tollgard’s London showrooms.Bassam Fellows’ Geometric Series celebrates the sublimity of pure geometry, as championed by the Wiener Werkstätte and the Bauhaus. A hero of the series and a modernist staple, the CB-41 Daybed is meticulously crafted in solid wood and features cushions hand-stitched from butter-soft Scandinavian leather. This is a piece that will age beautifully; destined to become a true future heirloom. The Brutus Chair, launched in Milan in 2020, came to designer Craig Bassam in a dream. Seemingly ‘cut’ rather than ‘built, it expertly marries the Brutalist tendencies of Le Corbusier et al with a contemporary, organic smoothness. A gently curving solid wood frame supports a seat in either Vienna cane or hand-stitched upholstery upon impossibly smooth elliptical legs. A masterpiece of furniture design. Please contact our showrooms if there is a particular piece you are interested in, as we update our displays regularly.
