During the years of 1941 and 1942, the Ateliers Jean Prouvé planned and executed a number of interior design projects for a chemical company in France. Numerous pieces of furniture were developed in connection with this commission, including a table made of wood that exemplifies Prouvé’s construction methods: its structural details illustrate the interplay of forces and stresses – similar to the later design of the EM Table, whose metal legs distinguish it from its predecessor.
Due to the scarcity of metal during World War II, the “Table Salle à Manger Bois” was designed with wooden legs, leading to the name Table S.A.M. Bois. Available in natural oak, dark stained oak or American walnut, Table S.A.M. Bois by Jean Prouvé adds a high-quality, inviting touch to cafeterias, meeting rooms or central spaces in open-plan office environments.
BRAND HIGHLIGHT
The VITRA story began in 1953 when Willi Fehlbaum, the founder of Vitra, discovered chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames on a trip to the USA and decided to become a furniture manufacturer. He met the designer couple in person a short time later and developed a lasting friendship that has shaped our company ever since. Over the past decades, VITRA has worked closely with some of the world’s most important designers and their descendants. These collaborations have led to the production of many classics: furnishings from another era that remain as timely and vital as ever and continue to move and inspire us. As a furniture manufacturer, VITRA maintains a close relationship with their designers – whom they refer to as authors – and the result of these collaborations is always an original. In collaboration with us, our designers dedicate their time, expertise and craftsmanship to the development and launch of new products.

Jean Prouvé
Jean Prouvé, who regarded himself as an engineer throughout his lifetime, was both the designer and manufacturer of his product ideas. His unique oeuvre, ranging from a letter opener to door and window fittings, from lighting and furniture to prefabricated houses and modular building systems, encompasses almost anything that is suited to industrial production and construction.
