Buzzing with design fizz post-Milan and Copenhagen, we’ve found further inspiration in the form of Le Corbusier’s iconic words. For each of our clients, our mission is to help them answer their individual questions of living and create a home that feels unique to them. As designers, we curate and connect our clients to the treasure, and, in turn, help them find a better every day.

Three Days already feels like three weeks ago! My whistlestop tour to Copenhagen was too short, but very sweet.

Finn Juhl never fails to impress, and I really enjoyed catching up with Christian Poulsen at their party. The re-release of Finn Juhl’s Whisky chair caught my attention and I’m looking forward to receiving one in London.

Next stop was Malte Gormsen’s eponymous showroom. Malte has honed his craft making some incredible furniture for Denmark’s top restaurants and commercial spaces. I’m so happy that he is coming out from behind the scenes with his own company and embracing the limelight (a little – he is a very humble man). I loved the stones vases and the collection of oak tables designed by Space Copenhagen. I also got a preview of their newly launched dining table (designed by Norm architects) which I think will be a huge success.

As ever, I enjoyed my visit to Gubi. The Pacha chair remains one of those almost edible pieces of design. The new incarnation is an outdoor version. In a zingy zigzag, it called out to me for a little alfresco sit-down. Next time...

We are thrilled to be featured in LuxDeco’s Top 100! Over the last seventeen years, we’ve loved collaborating with our clients to create homes that answer their questions of living. Through each and every project, we’ve relished the opportunity to tell a story: one that is unique to our clients and resonates in their homes. Finding the red thread has become our mission statement and our own creative DNA.
These are always wonderful moments - not just for me and Monique - but for the entire Tollgard team. We’d like to extend a massive thank you to our team, the judges, our clients, and the amazing brands we work with. We can’t wait to celebrate this weekend!

Trends are always a tricky affair. They suggest a fast fashion design approach that’s faddy and unsustainable. We like to look for future classics, so here is our take on the focus and – hopefully - some future classics we found at the fair.

We distilled what we found interesting into four contrasting concepts: soft shapes | strong materials | soft divisions | strong natural thread.

1. ‘Soft shapes’ is probably the strongest trend and confirms what we saw in Paris earlier this year. Why draw a straight line when a curved one is so much more inviting, both ergonomically and aesthetically? Products from Meridiani, Galotti & Radice, Molteni & C, Linteloo, Piet Boon, Giobagnara, Scavolini, Giopato & Coombes, Tacchini, Van Rossum, Baxter, Henge, Ceccotti Collezioni, Giorgetti and La Manufacture feature in our edit, but this movement was current across the fair and in the showrooms. It’s definitely one that’s here to stay.

2. ‘Strong materials’ abounded: maximalism rather than minimalism where nature’s stones, metals and woods have been creatively worked to achieve maximum visual impact. We loved pieces from Henge, Exteta, Giorgetti, Cattelan Italia, De Castelli, Van Rossum and Agape – amongst many, many others.

3. As a counterpoint, ‘soft divisions’ is a trend we are seeing to softly divide open-plan spaces using a variety of screens, open joinery, shelving systems and planting to create more human-sized spaces. We were impressed by what we saw at Baxter, Henge, Rimadesio, Porada, Flexform, Molteni & C, and Meridiani.

4. Finally, we couldn’t ignore the ‘strong natural – or green – thread’ through the Fair. Not just from the outdoor furniture suppliers; nearly every brand found a way of bringing nature onto the stand, either into their showroom or into their pieces using a variety of cane or woven materials that beckoned the outside in. Molteni, Flexform, Baxter, Kettal, Golran, Giorgetti, Knoll and Giobagnara all drew on this natural theme.

It was hard to cut down the highlights of the Milan showrooms to under a minute! Over the week of the Milan Fair, we spent some glorious days and nights visiting some inspiring spaces.

How we loved the Milan fair! Perhaps it was that absence makes the heart grow fonder, or Milan in early summer, or – as we suspect – that every brand, maker, and designer put their very, very best foot forward. Our video has our highlights of the fair that we were particularly taken by. We will release a video for the showrooms in Milan separately, as there was just too much goodness to contain in 75 seconds!

Featuring - in the order that we rushed around in - the following design heroes ...

Our visit to Giopato and Coombes was on the hottest day of the Milan Fair. We stepped out of the baking heat into a cool oasis of plum blossoms, refracted in softly undulating metal curves … the new creation of partners-in-life-and-design, Cristiana Giopato & Christopher Coombes.

We have loved each one of their beautifully conceived luminaires and were thrilled to spend a little time with them as they described the inspiration and technical evolution of their new creation, Maehwa.

During a visit to Seoul they experienced a rare and beautiful moment when a whirl of plum blossom took to the air around them. Though intensely personal, the instant spoke to a universal moment of awakening: “It’s when we hold our breath lost in a whirlwind of events, and, all of a sudden, we perceive an inner calm, born from a pure connection with nature.”

Out of this moment ‘Maehwa’ – the Korean for plum blossom – was born. Sinuous leafy branches, laden with delicate blossoms, have been painstakingly recreated using technology that had to be brought into Europe from Japan. The dandelion-like light stalk is another innovation that has a character all of its own. The hand-blown spheres are delicately dusted with pink, white or grey and recreate the random interplay of nature’s hues and tints.

We cannot wait to bring this moment of spring to London.  If we could have put a blossom in our pocket, we would have …

The Henge world feels decidedly different. Over the last two years their flagship showroom has been painstakingly carved out of one of the most interesting – and central – locations in the heart of Milan’s fashion district. The attention to detail in the architecture is testimony to the passion that imbues every piece of their furniture, accessories and lighting.

There is a heartfelt commitment to working with the best that nature has to offer, and then, together with a handful of artisans, giving it wings. We were blown away by the sculptural, edgy monoliths that are their kitchen islands – blocks of the most beautiful stone in burnished metal, rosy pastel swirls and icy onyx. Their use of metal adds a dusting of gold and the patina of time, burnished to an individual, hard to emulate softness.

These pieces are for the discerning collector, one who cares about the stories and the people behind the functional sculptures they bring into their homes. We are truly delighted to be working with a family-run business that puts people and their passions at the heart of their work.
