Continuing our Danish love affair, a little update on our project in Copenhagen. Our talented friends at KBH (@koebenhavns_moebelsnedkeri) have been crafting up a storm and recently sent a sneak peek of the kitchen island and appliances cabinet in the apartment we are working on. We’re not quite where the render says we will be, but we are still in awe of the workmanship and the Fior di Bosco island. “We’re delving into Denmark this week – projects and pieces. Monique and I saw the Japan Sofa by @houseoffinnjuhl in September at the Finn Juhl flagship showroom when we were last able to travel to Copenhagen. It was love at first sight. The Japan series – as the name suggests – is inspired by traditional Japanese building techniques. You can see the reference to a Japanese temple door in how the solid backrest rests on the tapered legs. The circular recess at the end of the backrest — that cries out to be handled — is very typic of Finn Juhl, who famously said that deviation is in the detail. Another of the red threads of Juhl’s design is the idea of emphasising the difference between the carried and the carrying elements. Here he separates the backrest from the bearing frame with brackets in brass. My first light for @contardi_lighting, the couturier of lighting. Designed to play with the notion of functional sculpture, Contardi’s immaculate execution of the Belle succeeds in concealing it’s function until closer inspection. This image I took at the Furstenburg ceramic factory isn’t of a sculpture. It’s of the remnants of the glazing process they use for their Solitaire collection — a beautiful, accidental work made as a by-product of this fascinating process.The glaze technique is more than 1000 years old and produces unique combinations every time: a work of art from nature, helped by man.Under certain temperatures and with the help of added rock flour, crystals form on the porcelain shards during the firing process. We’re celebrating all things crafted this week. It made me think of a trip that Monique and I took to the Furstenberg factory a while ago. It was so impressive to see the continuation of traditional craft techniques — together with some truly innovative design work from their partners at Sieger. The photo is of the empty moulds for their vases that we walked past while touring the factory floor. I loved the idea of something positive emerging from these negative spaces. Happy Chinese New Year and welcome the year of the Ox! I thought of this project when considering the important influence of Chinese design and artefacts on our work – also the beautiful outlook and the idea of looking forward. The year of the ox seems particularly appropriate right now — “Oxen are the hard workers in the background, intelligent and reliable, but never demanding praise.” So many people working to keep us safe have been heroic in recent times, and perhaps the fact that this is year means they will get the praise they truly deserve. I first met founders (and brothers-in-law) @gabrielscott in New York around 10 years ago. In this age of organic shapes and hand-blown glass this Canadian studio has some geometric gems that cannot fail to attract attention. Their settings look almost like large-scale jewellery — an amazing contrast to the organic softness that we have become used to seeing.
