A trip to Klosters part III. Earlier this month, we spoke to Eldvarm about our love for their Scandinavian simplicity. Beautiful and functional pieces that help people connect and bring life to a ritual that means so much to us personally: the fire. Our favourite piece would have to be the Emma Basket - we love its versatility. Housed in this steel vessel are the ingredients for the perfect fire, as well as the opportunity for additional and easy storage for busy families.

A trip to Klosters. What a privilege and a pleasure to spend some time in a project we designed over Covid but never got to visit. This gem of a chalet perfectly reflects the warmth, generosity and hospitality of our creative and collaborative clients. We used local materials with a contemporary twist to create this 21st-century chalet. Local Vals stone, oak and pine combine with leather, boucle, wool and felt to create an energising cocoon. In theory, these ingredients don’t spell classic ski chalet but – but in practice, they prove to be the perfect combination of comfort and elegance.

Marvelling at Marble. Mother nature takes centre stage in this scene from another striking Maida Vale Arcadia bathroom. We looked to Italian stone expert, Salvatori, to help create this marbled interior. The Gris du Marais stone is the star of the show with its dappled grey-brown surface and metallic copper veins. A bespoke brass-lined mirrored shelf from metal couturier De Castelli recesses elegantly into the stone cocoon.

A soothing end to the week, with our Maida Vale Arcadia bathroom. Serene on the outside and soothing to be in, the design and building of them was a little more intense as we played Tetris with large format natural stones and some incredibly solid functional sculptures from John Pawson. We were clear that we wanted to remain true to the minimal architectural spirit drawn through the building, but inject a more textural, natural thread with every decision. For our happy clients, this neutral and calming retreat was worth the wait.

Serene on the outside and soothing to be in, the design and building of them was a little more intense as we played Tetris with large format natural stones and some incredibly solid functional sculptures from John Pawson. Small but mighty. The clean and contemporary cloakroom of our Maida Vale project celebrates great design in smaller spaces. A temple of Salvatori’s smooth stone in Gris du Marais marble is surrounded by verdant greenery and nestled into a bespoke iron-framed mirror by metal couturier De Castelli. The three elements work in balance to create a beautifully minimal interior.

It’s a year of significant milestones. This week we celebrate 18 whole years of Tollgard. Somehow our first baby has reached adulthood. In human terms, we can now expect more … increased independence, understanding and commitment. A new chapter built on a foundation of training, education and lessons learned. And in April Monique and I celebrate 20 years of marriage. 2023 is looking to be quite a year!

Rather than drinking 18 shots to celebrate adulthood, (an idea that found instant favour with Monique), we took the chance to think about the 18 key ingredients or mantras we turn to in our work and our lives. Hopefully, they resonate with you too.

Thank you to our clients, our colleagues, our other kids who have joined us on this journey, and the wonderful creative partners we have worked with on the way. How lucky are we to work in this fantastic industry.
