Mikado not only aims to impress by its serene yet commanding silhouette but also through its unparalleled comfort. The Mikado seating experience is defined by upholstery on all sides together with a dynamic movement of the backrest. A mechanism concealed beneath the seat allows the back to move with the sitter and comfortably recline at a slight angle. Mikado is available as an armchair or as a side chair. In the armchair version, the sides of the rounded backrest extend forward to simultaneously serve as armrests.
The covers of the Mikado chair are not glued and can be removed for cleaning or replacement. The legs may be replaced individually or exchanged for a different material option – wood or recycled aluminium. The inner seat panel is made of recycled aluminium while the core of the backrest shell is produced from recycled post-consumer polypropylene, which can be easily separated from the foam padding during recycling. The concept of a simple exchange of components gives Mikado long-term versatility, thereby ensuring longevity.
BRAND HIGHLIGHT
The VITRA story began in 1953 when Willi Fehlbaum, the founder of Vitra, discovered chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames on a trip to the USA and decided to become a furniture manufacturer. He met the designer couple in person a short time later and developed a lasting friendship that has shaped our company ever since. Over the past decades, VITRA has worked closely with some of the world’s most important designers and their descendants. These collaborations have led to the production of many classics: furnishings from another era that remain as timely and vital as ever and continue to move and inspire us. As a furniture manufacturer, VITRA maintains a close relationship with their designers – whom they refer to as authors – and the result of these collaborations is always an original. In collaboration with us, our designers dedicate their time, expertise and craftsmanship to the development and launch of new products.

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby founded their East London studio in 1996, after studying architecture together at the Royal College of Art. For more than two decades their work has challenged the boundaries of design in this country and abroad, while their commitment to lecturing, workshops and studio practice supports the development of new generations of designers.
