A closer look at the material that makes the Wave Collection so special: Grand Antique marble. Millions of years in the making, this rare stone comes with an intriguing history. From the palaces of Roman and Byzantine empires, to a special appearance in Ruhlmann’s Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris, this material carries an incredible provenance. Filippo and I were fascinated to learn that the French quarry, thought to be exhausted and defunct, was only rediscovered in 2012. Hidden from history, literally submerged under water, this reborn quarry held one more nugget.  A magnificent block – vast and of incredible quality – waited just for us. The Refined Workshop + Tollgard are privileged to celebrate this extraordinary material with an exclusive creative collaboration. A golden opportunity to make waves - Filippo and I jumped at the chance to design something extraordinary for the Refined Workshop. We wanted to create a collection that pushed the boundaries of design and material tradition. We also knew that the Refined Workshop, with their technical expertise and encyclopaedic knowledge of stonemasonry, could bring this vision of the impossible to life. From the first drawings on pencil and paper to the sophisticated renders on a computer screen, each step was small and evolutionary – but seeing these contemporary sculptures in person for the first time was a revelation. Filippo and I wanted to create functional sculpture and to challenge material tradition – essentially to make the impossible possible. I’ve been a Bond fan ever since I can remember and have loved revisiting the classics as well as watching the latest films with my sons. Daniel Craig’s recent performance was absolutely riveting, and we were privileged to watch a private screening at the very fancy Odeon Luxe in Leicester Square. It reminded me of our Knightsbridge project which features this elegant walk-in-wardrobe – just perfect for the sartorially suave hero. Our client wanted a contemporary space that would excite and engage them each morning but also offer functional storage solutions. The panelling system from @porroofficial allowed us to combine sophistication with flexibility, function with a sharply masculine elegance. Last week I made my way to the workshop in Slovenia for one of the most exciting trips I’ve taken in a long time. I was on my way to inspect the very first edition of the Wave console created from Grand Antique marble – a stone that dates all the way back to Roman times. If I’m honest, the journey there was slightly terrifying. What if the console didn’t look as beautiful as it had done on paper, or in our imagination? What if the Wave fell flat? I didn’t have to worry. At all. Grand Antique was everything that we knew it would be. We lit our first fire of the season this weekend! It’s strange to almost have welcomed the rain and the cold just for the chance to get cozy again. A fireplace is so much more than a piece of furniture or an architectural decision. It is a ritual that you add to your home and your life. The ritual is something that connects me not just with a part of my childhood, but with the outside and natural world as well. Fire has been at the heart of the home even before we moved into dwellings – it is part of our DNA to feel secure and safe in its light and warmth. This active exercise connects us more strongly to home as verb rather than noun. It is functional sculpture at its most essential. One of my favourite fireplaces has to be this one from our Danish summerhouse. It reminds me of Scandinavian winters immediately. The design journey is an evolution – made up of a million decisions and moments. The revolution is captured in a superb ‘before and after’ montage. It’s the My Fair Lady moment for clients, designers and design enthusiasts combined. And it’s awesome. For this contemporary Chelsea residence we were faced with a small kitchen space that lacked light and character. Our clients wanted an energised focal point that they could spend time in together as a family – and they wanted it to be twice as big ... or at least, they wanted to steal as much space as possible from wherever possible. We found the answer to this question of living in some architectural Tetris: expanding the space with the addition of the breakfast room; extending the footprint of the house out into the garden while incorporating internal unused spaces as well. The after is wonderfully sophisticated and welcoming in its proportions with a high-contrast kitchen from Bulthaup, showcasing blocks of textured blackened wood and white granite to create energy and interest. The true, clean lines of the kitchen units as well as the intersecting XXL lights from Vibia are strong and dynamic. We love these Vibia lights as they increase the volume of light in this dark part of the house while adding contemporary zing against the original cornicing. Pocket doors allow the breakfast bar to be open when needed and tidied away for the rest of the day. The final piece of this puzzle is found in the functional sculpture of the dining table.
