In the age of organic shapes and hand-blown glass their geometric gems cannot fail to attract attention.

I first met founders (and brothers-in-law) Gabriel and Scott in New York around 10 years ago. Their settings look almost like large-scale jewellery — an amazing contrast to the organic softness that we have become used to seeing.

A Few of My Favourites

The Luna Series

Taking inspiration from, and giving gentle reference to, the moon, the aptly named Luna series is a collection that comprises of sculptural forms, coloured blown glass and refracted light. The stunning effect created as a result, emits a soft and diffused glow, reminiscent of the glow that radiates like a halo around the moon on a dark night. The lighting systems in this series are highly customisable, stacking and combining a range of different coloured glass additions and then assembling in either a vertical or horizontal suspension.

The Myriad Series

Reminiscent of blossoming trees, the Myriad series combines a soft and natural glow, with engineered and sharp precision. The series juxtaposes angular arms and pivoting joints of the metal frame with the diffused, warm luminosity of its double-blown glass tips. The series highlights the relationship between craftsmanship and engineering and the striking outcome that can be achieved, as a result.

The Harlow Series

The Harlow series radiates glamour and refinement through its use of sparkling prisms, jewel-esque glass and metal frame encasing. Available in wall scone, chandelier and pendant, the series provides luxury and elegance suitable for a variety of projects and lighting requirements. From the understated wall scone to the showstopper chandelier, we love this series for its combination of sculptural presence and delicate aesthetic considerations, like treasures in a jewellery box.

Across the peaceful ocean, a thirty-thousand square-foot studio in Montreal’s historic Garment District used to house two visionary founders, Gabriel Kakon and Scott Richler. A tour-de-force concoction of architecture, industrial design, and jewellery-making — this incredible medley of skillsets is evident in each of their designs. From the structural composition of a frame, to the details of how a piece is built; from the elegant, geometric, crystalline styling of a hanging pendant to the colour of the hand-blown glass: these are heirloom pieces to cherish. The next chapter of the company sees two become one, with the company now in the sole hands of Scott.

The Welles Pendant

Singular pendants, but by no means lacking in design and engineering, these individually hung lights embody a complex design process. Each light features a coloured glass blown inside a clear glass envelope, which allows for a soft diffusion of filtered light to pass through its translucent aspects. The result is that of a sparkling gem, which can be suspended on its own or in a cluster with other pendants, to create a glistening display. Available in smoked black, alabaster white and California pink glass, with a range of hardware colours, the Welles pendant allows for infinite possibilities.

The Welles Sconce

The Welles Double Blown Glass sconce is a twist on the pendant in the same series. Fitted to the wall, this polygonal shape features polished, crisp edges and uses the double blown glass technique, to achieve a layered and clever method for diffusing light. Available in a selection of coloured glass and hardware colours.

As partners in life and work, Monique and I know that it’s important to celebrate the milestones. To stop and smell the roses along the way. Otherwise we’re in danger of rushing from project to project, from year to year, from decade to decade without appreciating the incredible journey along the way.

Valentine’s Day reminded us of the importance of celebrations, of the importance of milestones. So we started thinking about anniversaries, and how we could help celebrate them with some very, very beautiful things that could tell the story of a journey of design, love and a shared passion for beautiful things.

Celebrating the Years

A Zhuang Hong Yi Paper-scape

1st Anniversary: Paper

For the first anniversary, how about an incredible work of art, made from paper? This striking, colour-shifting piece from acclaimed Chinese artist Zhuang Hong Yi is made from folded origami rice paper. Every angle is different… much like a marriage!

2nd Anniversary: Cotton

The second anniversary gift is cotton. These stunning pieces from Ruth Waller and Lee Hewett are made from cotton bobbles mounted on sprung steel stalks. They’re also partners in life and work and their textile pieces exude happiness, joy and whimsy.

Described in The New York Times as “solitary indulgence”, we think there might be room for two if you snuggle up very close on this stunning piece from New York atelier BassamFellows! The hand-sewn, achingly soft leather cushions are just right for the third anniversary.

Made using Belgian linen yarns, this incredible bedding set from Bemboka exudes the classically understated and sophisticated sense of taste you want from bedding, letting the true texture and threads of the fabric deliver that desire to wrap yourself up in-between the sheets.

5th Anniversary: Wood

Elegantly beautiful, with curves that take you on a journey across its devilishly unique form. This two-seater bench designed by Roberto Lazzeroni at Ceccotti Collezioni evokes an authentic sense of character and old-fashioned charm.

10th Anniversary: Tin

These tin vases from Danish makers &Tradition are a stunning little set of collectibles. Whether on their own or adorned with a few flower stems they always delight the eye due to the variation in the polished, burnished and oxidised metals.

A Vase from Moser

15th Anniversary: Crystal

A Moser crystal vase is forever. Especially one that’s called Diva. These stunning vases are handmade by elite artisans in a tradition going back 160 years. The intensity and mastery of their iconic hues of colour is a well-guarded secret – colours that you will fall in love with.

20th Anniversary: China

A truly beautiful piece of tableware is sometimes invisible, allowing the star of the show to take centre-stage. This collaboration in porcelain between Piet Boon and Serax oozes sublime, subtle elegance and the understated taste that’s the hallmark of this Dutch master.

30th Anniversary: Pearl

BassamFellows

Tollgard Chelsea Harbour is delighted to introduce a capsule collection from BassamFellows to its collection of contemporary and modern design heroes. A little over fifteen years ago architect Craig Bassam and creative director Scott Fellows began drafting their vision for a new kind of American luxury company. Their pioneering Craftsman Modern aesthetic, which marries architectural authority with a minimal-artisanal philosophy, was introduced with the debut of the iconic BassamFellows Tractor Stool at the 2003 Salone del Mobile in Milan.

The Geometric Dining Table is BassamFellows first pedestal table featuring a tubular steel base formed from a collection of radiating postal elements mechanically fixed and cinched together with wrapped leather. The top is veneered Walnut with a carved, solid Walnut edge.

In Black Oiled Walnut with Vienna cane seat. The BassamFellows Brutus chair, launched in Milan in 2020, has its roots in the powerful Modernist vernacular of Perriand and Jeanneret, but is softer and visually lighter. It emphasizes certain sculptural elements, elevating visual aspects evident in much Brutalist design, but updated with an organic smoothness.

Gubi

The Wonder Sofa is a contemporary reinterpretation of 1970s lounge furniture by Space Copenhagen for GUBI. Its designers have updated the informal, generous and playful nature of the original modular sofas with an elegant and simple form

Named after the epic poms of ancient times, GamFratesi’s Epic Table for GUBI is a sculptural piece of furniture inspired by Greek columns and Roman architecture. Made in Italy from travertine stone, the monolithic form emphasizes the materiality of the stone, the natural beauty of its veins, and the vibrant texture of its unique patina—in which a new detail can be discovered with every use.
